The initial aim of tai chi is to teach the practitioner to relax. Slow flowing movements of the body are used to bring the mind and body into harmony, generating the body's own positive
energy, Qi. Tai chi incorporates chi kung exercises which further encourage correct breathing and greater efficiency of the body's systems. Tai Chi means 'the grand ultimate' and its slow movements help focus the mind on the now and generate self awareness, leading to inner peace. This is also known as enlightenment.
The roots of tai chi are enshrouded in myths and legends of Chinese culture. Today, while the traditional practitioners are still in evidence, the majority practise tai chi in order to maintain and improve their health and to provide an increasingly necessary antidote to the stresses and strains of modem-day-life.
